Prior to moving to the Central Coast in 2001, Joan lived in the Lower Blue Mountains and had a few watercolour lessons at the Blue Mountains Creative Arts Centre.

She has been a member of the Central Coast Watercolour Society since 2003. She is primarily self-taught but has attended workshops conducted by the Society and also Grafton Artfest under the guidance of many different tutors.

Watercolour is only one of her hobbies and she only completes two or three framed paintings in a year.

Joan has sold several paintings, one of her favourites, "Pixi's Lookout", was sold at the Society's 2009 exhibition at Parliament House, Sydney.
